John Doherty

b. 1949

Painter John Doherty was born in Kilkenny, Ireland and lives and works in Cork, Ireland. Doherty’s┬árealist paintings depict nostalgic urban landmarks and coastal nautical scenes that contemplate the notion of time and how places and relics are tied up in collective memories, heritage and history. Over the last 40 years, he has held solo exhibitions in Sydney and Melbourne, and internationally in Ireland, the United States and Papua New Guinea, and was artist in residence at the National College of Art in Port Moresby in 1979.

Doherty has been a finalist in both the Wynne and Sulman Art Prizes at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and his work is held in collections in Australia, Europe and the United States.
