Recently I have been travelling between the UK and Australia on a very regular basis. During these
stays I have spent time visiting many of the galleries showing Australian contemporary art. I have
long been an admirer of Australian art, it is vital, fresh, and intelligent. I was particularly struck by
the artists represented by Stuart Purves, Director of Australian Galleries which was established in
1956 and has spaces in both Melbourne and Sydney. Conversations with Stuart gave birth to the
idea of me bringing a group of their highly respected artists to London.
