Yering Station & Yarra Valley Arts Sculpture Exhibition and Awards

In News October 17, 2017

Last year Bridget Nicholson won the coveted Yering Station Sculpture Award for ‘Hold’, the result of an inspirational art project involving 187 indigenous and non-indigenous women from the Gunnedah region of NSW. The resulting sculpture resembled a five meter long, floating, boat-shaped cloud of inverted Kopi/mourning caps held aloft by copper wire: a truly eloquent reflection on cultural mourning practices and our relationship to the land.

This year the finalists will be selected by a panel of esteemed arts professionals including Jeanette Davidson, Art Director Montsalvat, Alex McCulloch, Director Alex McCulloch Art Consultancy, and Chris Saines CNZM, Director Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art.

During the exhibition visitors are encouraged to vote for their favourite sculpture by entering the People’s Choice Awards or they can take part in curated, guided tours hosted each Saturday in November by Dr Ewen Jarvis, Curator of the Yering Station Art Gallery and the annual sculpture event. Bookings are essential via the Yering Station website.

The Yarra Valley Arts / Yering Station Sculpture Exhibition has grown steadily since 2001, and is now a must-see event on the Victorian arts calendar attracting significant interstate visitation. It is respected for its consistency and longevity and its ability to annually showcase a cross section of contemporary Australian sculptural practice from both established and emerging artists.

The event is the result of a collaboration between Yarra Valley Arts, a not for profit organisation dedicated to enhancing the cultural lives of Yarra Valley residents and visitors, and Yering Station, a premier winery in the Yarra Valley region whose arts program encompasses painting, photography and sculpture.

Commission from sales are donated to Yering Station’s preferred charity LARCH (Leukaemia Auxiliary of the Royal Children’s Hospital) and to Yarra Valley Arts towards the promotion of arts in the region.
