Burning Moonlight: illustrating Marianne Faithfull's final musical release

OPENING NIGHT Tuesday 3 March 6pm to 8pm

ARTIST TALK Saturday 7 March 2pm

Driving home from my father’s funeral in 2024, I heard Marianne Faithfull’s song “Born to Live” come up on my radio.  It moved me to tears and I thought I could really make something great out of that song in pictures.  Knowing that Nick Cave had worked with Marianne I asked him whether he could put me in touch and he passed me onto the filmmakers Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard who were making a documentary on Marianne.  They asked her if I could illustrate her song and she said yes.  Then the executive producer for Marianne’s final release “Burning Moonlight”, Andrew Batt, suggested I shelve that idea and maybe try illustrating the song “Burning Moonlight”.  He sent me the lyrics, then a rough mix of the song.  It was short and very moving.  It bravely looked death in the face; she clearly knew her time was coming to an end.  I put my heart and soul into capturing that theme, her beauty and her bravery.

Marianne Faithfull  1946-2025

Singer, songwriter, and actress, Marianne Faithfull rose to fame as one of the key cultural figures of the swinging 1960’s. Despite her publicised battle with drugs, she survived addiction to have a music career of longevity and lasting influence. Marianne’s recording career spanned an incredible 27 albums over a sixty-year period: From her early pop hits ‘As Tears Go By’ and ‘Come And Stay With Me’, to her landmark album Broken English, her collaborations with renowned artists and musicians established her as a true pop culture icon.

Before her passing Marianne also completed work on two important projects. A final EP, Burning Moonlight was recorded to commemorate her 60th anniversary in music. Conceived as a tribute to her two debut albums; it mixed her pop roots with her folk influences, and brought her career full circle, reflecting a lifetime of musical creativity. Marianne also completed filming on the new documentary Broken English by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival where it received a 5-minute standing ovation. It receives its Australian premier at the Perth Festival in March 2026 before going on general release.
