The žaltys is a revered grass snake in Lithuania, believed to bring good luck to households. People often left out saucers of milk to encourage the small snakes into their homes. This work utilises frottage from domestic items, many of which are from my mother’s home, as well as frottage from plastic waste. The žaltys is a common symbol in Lithuanian homes, and snakes are also strongly associated with the Australian bush. For me, the snake holds an extra layer of resonance, as I was born in the year of the snake. The snake frottages alludes to the reinvention of self that happens with migrant diasporas.
