Shorelines
- Sue Anderson

‘This recent series of artworks is inspired by the natural, diverse and unique environment of Maria Island/ Wukaluwikiwayna, Tasmania /Lutruwitu.

This natural peaceful island, quiet, apart from the sound of the waves, birdcalls and wind, reveals a unique beauty in the small details seen up close and the overall surroundings of land, sky and sea.

There is a heavy presence felt here of the original Puthikwilayti people who lived here for over 35,000 years and the people from The Oyster Bay Nation who made regular canoe crossings from the mainland coast.

Anchoring close to shore observing the Isthmus from a distance, this stretch of land revealed its own distinct quality and character. Over days and nights spent outdoors, senses became enlivened and attuned to the rhythms of tides and winds, the sun, and moon and the clouds passing overhead.

The shoreline was often drawn with endless patterns by the tides and sprinkled with a variety of daily treasures left by the sea.  Separating the two worlds of land and sea this changing dividing line was the border of many meanderings and always visually captivating.’
