Broken, Kalorama 2025 was painted at the foot of the Wurun / Eucalyptus viminalis / Manna Gum that discarded these limbs; an ancient being that bears the scars of the bushfires of 1939 and 1962. I was initially drawn to the great dollops of leaves hanging from broken branches, like beautiful natural chandeliers, catching light and holding the space. As I drew, then painted, the unfolding crisis in Gaza, ongoing conflicts in Sudan and the Ukraine contributed to a broken-hearted sense of despair.
