hand bound retchousou sketchbook with pencil frottage, rubber stamps and collage from collected print ephemera
15.5 x 15.5 x 2 cm (h x w x d)

In 2023 and 2024, I travelled to Japan for RMIT to co-lead study tours with School of Art students. One of the projects we set for the students was for them to bind and fill their own washi sketchbooks with impressions from the study tour. I set myself the same challenge.  I left my 2023 sketchbook on the shinkansen and never saw it again. This is my sketchbook from the 2024 trip. It captures my encounter with Japan through collected rubber stamps, frottages from found surfaces and collages from packaging that I generated along the way.
