In January 2001, artist Jeffrey Smart and Stuart Purves of Australian Galleries met in Bilbao to see Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum. On returning to Jeffrey's home and studio in Tuscany, inspired by their experience, they discussed drawing.

Jeffrey was encouraged to search out his early drawings, studies and sketchbooks. They were stored in folios and drawers in his studio and some had not been sighted for nearly sixty years. After two days of sifting, a works on paper exhibition had its genesis. Stuart returned to Australia with 210 works.
