In this wonderful and very personal book Lloyd Rees looks back over his own work and selects paintings which he feels are distinctive milestones in his long career as an artist. Assisted by noted art historian Renée Free, who helped to transcribe and edit numerous interview tapes, Lloyd Rees takes us on a journey through the many impressions which have shaped his life and vision.
The early works featured here include Old Boats, Wollstonecraft Bay (c. 1920) and Balmoral (1927) and these are followed by several paintings from the late 1930s, such as Autumn, Lane Cove River (1937) and The Back Porch (1940). The book also includes a number of works inspired by the New South Wales south coast, Italy and Sicily, and a substantial section on works painted during the last thirty years.
Lloyd Rees notes in his introduction that 'the aim of this book is to give a wide coverage of my painted work, but with an emphasis upon the very recent exhibition and figure works which have never been published.
This is the quintessential book on a much loved and admired artist.
