The sea krait is a semi aquatic snake with a paddle-like tail for swimming but which must come onto land in order to digest prey and lay eggs. For me, the sea krait is reminiscent of the Lithuanian tale of Eglė the Serpent Queen, in which a young woman leaves her family’s home to live with her snake husband beneath the sea, ultimately coming to feel torn between the two worlds – a common phenomenon within migrant diasporas. This work utilises frottage from domestic items, many of which are from my mother’s home, as well as frottage from plastic waste. The snake frottages alludes to the reinvention of self that happens within the migrant experience.
