pencil frottage on washi from found surfaces and collaged plates
61 x 91 cm (h x w)
In the Lithuanian tale of Eglė the Serpent Queen, a young woman leaves her family’s home to live with her snake husband beneath the sea, ultimately coming to feel torn between the two worlds – a common phenomenon within migrant diasporas – and spends much of her time searching for a way to return to her birthplace. This work utilises frottage from domestic items, many of which are from my mother’s home, as well as frottage from purpose-made collaged plates. The dark blue stars from collaged plates depict the Serpens Caput (snake’s head) constellation which appears in the northern hemisphere, alluding to the ancient practice of navigating one’s way home by the stars.
