Opening Tuesday 22 October 2024 6pm – 8pm
In this exhibition, Hilary Finch presents a collection of photographic artworks that have been crafted with subtle intensity, rendering the resulting scenes both monumentally powerful and dreamlike.
The artist composes these landscapes through a process of pictorial construction, paying homage to a long history of fine-art photography utilising this method to advance the medium away from the idea of documentary “truth”, towards a described inner reality and a psychological evocation of landscape.
“I have always been fascinated with what lies beneath the surface. Compelling art, for me, touches on the ineffable and moves me on an emotional level. In my own work I seek out sites of tension where there is a sense of a threshold, an edge of awareness of forces beyond the visible.”
Traces of ancient civilisations, and geological and glacial formations serve as focal points for the artist’s exploration of such themes as primal forces and transcendent currents. The resulting enigmatic images evoke awe and wonder and speak to the nature of time and the inevitable passage of all things.
