Congratulations to Greg Johns who has been selected to create a major, large-scale sculpture for the Lochaven Active Open Space in Cranbourne West.
This public artwork commission will make a valuable contribution to the designated site as a distinctive and integrated element of the Lochaven Active Open Space project, which is part of the expansion of sporting clubs and other recreation facilities in Cranbourne West.
The sculpture will become part of a diverse collection of over 200 artworks in the public realm managed by the City of Casey.
The work will respond to aspects of the area’s unique heritage, attributes of local neighbourhoods and the aspirations of its communities. Greg’s proposal responds in particular to the history of the site prior to European settlement, when the lands around Casey were inhabited by the Bunurong/Boon Wurrung people and the Wurundjeri peoples.
‘The sculpture will be made from Corten steel, stainless steel and some bronze elements. It is very organic and natural in form. The sculpture pays homage to the wonderful bulbous trees of our interior landscape, which speak so much of place. Connections to Aboriginal culture are implied. The bronze refers to the nuts produced by these trees, and speaks to what was here before European arrival.‘ – Greg Johns, 2021
At this stage, Greg has been working on creating a maquette in preparation for his final piece. The final project will be completed an installed in early 2022. We look forward to being able to visit the site in the near future.
