OPENING NIGHT Tuesday 29 July 6pm to 8pm
I’m happiest when I’m creating 3-D figures: whether that means sculpting in wax or, as more recently, clay. I see myself as a bit of a caricaturist of little men. It’s all about shape and colour. A figure starts to come to life as I move the materials around and its personality begins to develop.
The new work presented in this exhibition marks a change in scale from the smaller figurines I’ve been creating in the last decade. The larger size enables me to explore shape and form in new ways, but painting the figures has become a more important part of the process for me too, as I try to match colour arrangements with these characters.
This interest in colour has become huge in my printmaking practice of late as well and the prints selected for this show reflect this impact. For me, the prints and the sculptures are two parts of a whole, exploring character and colour in different mental and physical landscapes.
