“Turbulence has preoccupied me since the start of the pandemic but has simmered within me for decades of climate change, war, geopolitical drifts. Like many, I am desperate and vertiginous. My own interior turbulence of ill health has mirrored the world’s, but not prevented the making of art. I continue to contemplate public space and its porosity, as well as returning to my older works and contaminating them with turbulence, and to gleefully render in charcoal and pastel new markings, new landscapes, new self-portraits.” – Richard Goodwin, 2023
