‘The local and global is brought together in this exhibition of new works by painter and sculptor Rodney Pople. Born in Tasmania and now a long-term resident of Sydney, Pople returned to Tasmania in 2016 to investigate the fate of the state’s native animal species, many of whom are no on the endangered list. Working from first-hand empirical observation of Tasmanian Devils, Quolls, Bandicoots, Plovers and other endangered native creatures, he created this series of ceramic ‘portrait’ busts that celebrate both their resilience and vulnerability.
Pople’s paintings are the result of a trip to Africa the artist made in 2014, to research native African animals and their threatened future in the globalised world. He was appalled to see first-hand the devastating impact of poaching on African animal populations. The resulting paintings are key examples of Pople’s ongoing commitment in his work to addressing abuses of power.’
