The River
- Angus Fisher

The River is a survey of the lower reaches of the Hawkesbury River, reflecting on and paying homage to the area in which the artist lives. Originating from personal explorations of the region; birdwatching, bushwalking, paddling and fishing, the series of work has matured into a panoramic investigation of the area’s landscape, wildlife and unique beauty.

The large charcoal works investigate various sites adjoining the river as a witness to the passing of time. From the ephemeral rhythms of waves and tides to the deep geological time embedded in the stones and rockfaces. Each work is drawn from photos and sketches captured over different intervals of time, from seconds to days.

The works are fractured and drawn in segments allowing the subjects to reflect back a sense of the timespans they are witness to.

The smaller ink pen and watercolour drawings punctuate the larger charcoal works with specific, individual depictions of the wildlife living amid these expansive landscapes. They are a mosaic of organisms living independently yet connected in a complex fabric. Lifted from their surroundings, they are extracted and singularly displayed here in their full glory.
