We are pleased to share that Francis Giacco has been featured in an article written by John McDonald, art critic for The Sydney Morning Herald, titled ‘Conservative choice’: Would this artist still win the Archibald Prize today?.
Published in the Saturday 1 July newspaper, John McDonald discusses Giacco’s exhibition Recent work: Pictures at an Exhibition (apologies to Mussorgsky), at Australian Galleries, Sydney, in depth. He describes the show as “a 40-year survey that combines the most fastidious craftsmanship with a gradual exploration of favourite motifs, never departing from the familiar territory of portraiture, still life, figures and interiors.”
“His compositions are complex, his colours and textures handled with extraordinary patience. He isn’t a showman but here is a quiet determination to impress in the immaculate way he paints a curtain, an article of clothing, a flower.”
