Michel Lawrence

Michel Lawrence is best known for his large-scale portrait photographs of some of Australia’s most important artists including Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Lloyd Rees, John Olsen and Tim Storrier. His photography is in various private and public collections, most notably the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, The National Library in Canberra, The Queensland Art Gallery, The Museum of Modern Art at Heide, Melbourne University and a various regional galleries. A large collection of his photographs of musicians, actors and performing artists is also in the permanent collection of the Melbourne Performing Arts Museum. Michel has also produced two large format photographic books such as ‘Framed: Portraits of Australian Painters’ which was published by Hardie Grant in 1998 and is now out of print and ‘All of Us’, which was published by Scribe in 2008 and is also now out of print. His work has also been reproduced in major metropolitan newspapers and magazines such as The Australian, The Age/Sydney Morning Herald, the Herald Sun, Good Weekend and Harpers Bazaar. Michel Lawrence has exhibited a number of times at Australian Galleries in both Melbourne and Sydney, the most recent a joint show with John Kelly and Sidney Nolan curated by Damian Smith in October 2017.
