Congratulations to Dianne Fogwell who has been awarded the Canberra Critics’ Award for Visual Arts.
The 28 year-old Canberra Critics’ Circle is the only such group of critics in Australia that runs across all major art forms, not just performing arts. The circle changes each year depending on who is writing or broadcasting on the arts in Canberra. They aim to provide a focal point for Canberra reviewers in print and electronic media through discussions and forums, and make annual awards to ACT region artists.
Dianne was awarded for her major work in the exhibition Paper: cut, stain, fold and press at Beaver Galleries in Canberra. Her poignant black and white linocuts, Lost birds, depicted threatened Australian bird species. These beautiful prints were individually pinned on a galvanised iron tree. They express her concern with the devastation of habitat through bush fires.
The accompanying artist’s book, Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, compiled of woodcuts, linocuts and charred imagery is a beautifully moving memorial to the Ash Wednesday bush fires of 1983 and their destructive effect on wild life.
