After graduating from RMIT in 1983, Burtt has maintained an art practice concentrating on object based work. He has consistently exhibited over the last four decades in solo and curated group exhibitions, and executed a number of public commissions, as well as teaching and art critique. While proficient in a range of media, his favoured medium is steel, manipulated by cold forming and welding. This is the principal material used in his commissioned and public art work. His monumental works address the built world with clear architectural motifs, and reference its history and legacy. Generally adhering to a smaller scale, his cosmological works explore the aesthetics and world view of instruments modelling and marking time and space.
