Michael Snape

b. 1951

Michael Snape is a sculptor of national significance, who deftly composes structures using combinations of silhouetted human figures. Snape’s continuing fascination with the literal and metaphysical interconnectedness of people resonates poetically through his captivating and masterfully formed steel sculptures, which range from small to considerably large scale. Snape’s works are derived from laser cutting, which is then radically reworked to allow the artist to leave his worked mark. Aesthetically satisfying curves and familiar human forms blend and connect with a rhythmic flow, leading the viewer to find and make connections both visual and conceptual.

Michael Snape has held solo exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne and New York and has received a number of major public sculpture commissions in locations across Australia including Melbourne, Darling Harbor, Bondi, Kings Cross and Balmain. Snape’s work is held in the collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Gold Coast City Gallery, Queensland; Macquarie University, Sydney; McClelland Gallery + Sculpture Park, Melbourne; Orange Regional Gallery, Orange; the Melbourne Powerhouse Museum and in numerous Private Collections.
