The Phoenix and the Iron Wolf
- Jazmina Cininas

‘The Phoenix and the Iron Wolf’ signals a conscious shift towards more environmentally sustainable art practices by Jazmina Cininas, while also reflecting an engagement with her Lithuanian-Australian cultural heritage.

The quintessentially ‘Aussie bush band’ lagerphones are reimagined as Baltic nature motifs, creating a shimmering forest of working art objects from recycled beer caps and salvaged timbers. The lagerphones have previously been exhibited in ‘The Sparrow Made Some Beer’, Jazmina’s collaborative art project which was awarded the 2022 Community/Cultural Project of the Year by the Australian Folk Alliance. Jazmina’s ‘Grey Wolf’ lagerphone was subsequently acquired by Museums Victoria.

The frottage works were born of the 2020 lockdown, when Jazmina was suddenly in need of mediums that her printmaking students could utilise from their homes without specialist equipment. The artist has since fallen in love with frottage’s ability to both record and transform the items that surround her and waste plastics, as well as its light environmental footprint. The notions of transformation and resourcefulness are familiar to many a migrant who has had to reinvent themselves in a new land and culture. Like a phoenix, the frottage images arise anew from the everyday and the overlooked.
