Birds & Flowers
- Kate Hudson

‘The prints in Birds & Flowers are from several ongoing series of work. The most recent of which are the flower arrangements in black & white geometric vases. When I came to live in Australia over 30 years ago, I knew very little about plants and I wasn’t particularly interested in birds. I grew up in London where the gardens were small, and the birds were unremarkable. I was seduced by the brightness of the light here, the largeness of the skies, the abundance of native flowers and the rainbow colours of the parrots, it was all so exotic.

My interest in bird watching and native plants had begun. I started to notice the quiet beauty of the smaller birds, the ones who are always there when you are out walking in the bush. And to learn the names of the new plants that would feature so prominently in my linocuts. The heavy rainfall during Winter and Spring this year made everything flower profusely and inspired me to make my most recent works, Flowering Gums & Circle Vase and Wattle & Banksia.’ – Kate Hudson, 2022
