“North-west Tasmania gets almost twice the rainfall as the south and east, so it remains green while much of the state is parched and dry. It is also very hilly with fertile red, volcanic soil suited to growing vegetables, particularly potatoes. There are dairy farms, beef cattle, paddocks of onions, poppies, tulips and the usual grain crops.

For fifty years I have lived in an old farmhouse much like the one in my painting ‘The End of the Day’. This exhibition shows the countryside and the seaside around the town of Wynyard.

My subject matter comes from seeing something that excites me, mostly out of the car window, so I need to remember what it was that impressed me. My paintings are reliant on memory so details may well be left out. I like a painting that looks as though it was done by a human being.”
