Light and Space
- Margie Sheppard

‘In recent years, I have immersed myself in large abstract paintings, where I create combinations of colours and shapes. Each work begins with an initial idea that develops instinctively and unexpectedly during its materialisation. This is where I can lose myself entirely, looking, thinking, revisiting and finally finishing the work.

Working alongside the development of the paintings is my printmaking practice. I am now working on ‘my version’ of woodcut prints. Although at the time of printing I’m not free to change the timber shapes (they are cut to my design), the excitement comes with colour adjustments and the revealing of the final print.

At the core of my paintings and prints are the interplay of spherical and elemental geometric shapes, intertwined with linear elements which forge new shapes. Transparent overlays add further complexity to the compositions. I am rewarded when all these elements ‘align’ and it is this that inspires me to keep innovating and experimenting.

‘Light and Space’ is a feeling I seek to capture. Each person will see these works in their own way, but my hope is that they connect with the audience in an expansive way, be tireless in their visual interest and create for the viewer a breathing space amidst the chaos of existence.’ – Margie Sheppard, 2023
