A Trip to Sydney Dedicated to Tim ‘Ace’ Klingender
- Nick Howson

‘A year ago, Vickie and I embarked on a road trip up along the South Coast of NSW. We passed through the black remains of the bushfires to Eden. On the way to Malua Bay, we explored rocky coves and inlets, and their secluded beaches. Stopping at charming beachside towns, we travelled onwards to Wollongong and upwards to the blue mountains. Finally, we reached our destination, Sydney.

The trip was an invitation from an old school mate Ace, who owned a boat, to cruise around the harbour. Ace would fish and I would sketch. A ritual all artists do when faced with such rich subject matter. Cruising the harbour, Ace gave me a passionate account of the histories of the mangroves in the serene estuaries of Middle Harbour, the fishermen’s huts carved into the cliffs, and so much more. As we explored the differing coves to the factories on the Parramatta River and toured the abandoned shipyards on Cockatoo island, I scribbled madly into my sketchbook. In the evenings, inspired by the sites that l didn’t not know existed around the harbour, I captured the day’s adventures, painting on small wood panels, reminiscent of old cigar box lids.

Upon arriving back to Melbourne, l was told the shocking news, that my great friend, the very first person to inspire me to become an artist, had died in a freak boating accident. This show is dedicated to the memory of Tim ‘Ace’ Klingender.’ – Nick Howson, 2024
