- Peter Kingston

“…the last great poet-painter of Sydney Harbour.

Along with his late Cranbrook School friend Martin Sharp, Kingston always maintained that time itself was an artist, and that not everything old – be it ferries, buildings, funfairs, not to mention retreating species of nature – should be threatened with destruction by commercial interests.

And now he is no longer physically with us, the time has come to reflect even more upon the extraordinary diversity of his legacy.

For he will continue to live through his paintings, drawings, prints, artist books and their aura of humanity and humility. No Australian artist since Lloyd Rees has been so widely loved, and no creative enthusiasm has been offered so generously to anyone willing to embrace it. We desperately need what Peter stood for to face a precarious future.”

Barry Pearce, 2022
