Peter Wegner’s renowned oil paintings of armchairs and couches are masterful meditations on time, memory, and the human condition. These recurring worn and empty forms serve as portraits themselves, having born silent witness to lives lived and mirroring their changes and deterioration. Echoing his celebrated drawings of Centenarians, Wegner’s work captures the quiet resilience of aging and the power of what is present in absence.
Also included in the exhibition is Portrait of Guy Warren at 100, study #1, the initial study for the portrait that received the 2021 Archibald Prize.
