Reasons to be cheerful
- Rodney Forbes

OPENING NIGHT  Tuesday 29 July 6pm to 8pm

Painting is a very basic and essential human activity, like dancing and singing. Young children naturally draw and paint, just as they naturally dance and sing. In the high art world, painting goes in and out of fashion, so being a painter is a bit of a roller coaster, especially when market confidence, pandemics and looming world wars are thrown into the mix.

But what a privilege it is to be a painter. It employs and challenges every human faculty and has scope for endless complexity. Sigmund Freud, the father of modern psychology, thought that love and work were the only important things in life, famously saying, ‘Love and work, work and love – that’s all there is.’. To my mind, painting is the perfect synthesis of love and work.
