The fanciful figurative printmaking I create continues to explore the nature of individuality – ideas about persona, transformation and the absurd. There is a specific interest in how identity is expressed via the body; physical appearance and its capacity for alteration; the skin and its potential to be a site for reinvention – how the body can be a vehicle for communication by means of transformative devices, particularly anthropomorphism and body decoration.
A starting point for making sculpture was the question: “What types of objet d’art would the characters depicted in my work collect?” This inquiry sparked a playful exploration into the creation of small scale creatures as well as tiles, utilising various clays. The surfaces of these have been embellished with acrylic paint and varnish or coloured underglazes and clear overglaze to enhance each object’s singularity.
These three-dimensional pieces, in dialogue with my two-dimensional works on paper, are intended to provoke an interesting exchange between each other for viewers to enjoy.
