Nautical
- Julian Twigg

Nautical presents renowned maritime painter Julian Twigg’s latest body of work, including oil paintings on board, linen and paper and a series of ceramic vessels. These works were developed throughout 2022 during the artist’s travels to Sydney, Port Kembla and while attending a two-week artist residency at Lighthouse Arts, Newcastle.

As a maritime painter, the residency was a perfect fit for me. I paint from observation, and the vantage point from my studio on top of Nobby’s Lighthouse gave me a new perspective as I viewed the ships and tugs from above as they travelled to and from Newcastle.’ *

During his time in Sydney,  Julian Twigg relished in rediscovering familiar painting spots around the harbour, and the vibrant colour palette inspired by bright, clear skies.

‘While in Port Kembla I explored the steelworks, the outer harbour and the Eastern breakwater. It was back to basics, ships sea and sky, I loved it. I discovered a great spot at the foot of the Eastern breakwater and because it was sunny most of the days I was able to paint outdoors. I could look out to the Five Islands and view the car carriers and bulk carriers as they waited to come into Port, I was right on the water, invigorated by the waves crashing against the rocks.  As I was working quickly the paintings were immediate, full of life and energy, boasting plenty of paint and lots of gestural marks.’  *

Nautical reveals Julian Twigg’s deepening and ever evolving connection to the magnificence of the ocean, presenting his heartfelt response to the distinctive characteristics of the New South Wales coast.
