Sculptural Silver
- Philip Noakes

Philip Noakes is widely celebrated for his unique visual language and the exceptional quality of his work. He has earned a reputation over many decades as a consummate craftsman and an original and innovative artist within the expanded world of metal craft. His enduring passion for silversmithing and deft technical skills are evident in this recent series of brilliant sculptural pieces.

Philip’s work is realised through a desire to remain flexible in his creative approach, to push boundaries and master new techniques, and continually seek new perspectives. His works have a striking presence, their exquisite forms are visually arresting as singular objects, and in groupings create a captivating landscape.

In this series Philip explores variations on classical forms, transforming flat sheets of metal into sinuous shapes with distinctive textures that shimmer with light. From hollow forms that become closed containers, bowls that appear to float and lavish sculptural objects, these works are finished with elaborate patterns created by hammering, oxidising and heat treatments that enliven their surfaces.

The remarkable objects in this exhibition not only embrace the substantial history of silversmithing, but expand on its possibilities and underscore its relevance to contemporary creative practice. Like all significant art, it astonishes while providing a unique lens through which to view and understand our shared world.
