The Poetry of Performance
- Andrew Antoniou

OPENING NIGHT – TUESDAY 24 SEPTEMBER 6pm – 8pm

“This exhibition reflects my ongoing engagement with the world of theatre and its ancient traditions and transitions into new areas of the performing arts.

In my life, one of the seminal moments that created the impulse in me to record my experiences in drawing was at the age of 14 experiencing my first West End play. It was the moment the curtains parted at the Savoy Theatre in London that revealed to me this other world. A world where actors stand costumed and lit and ready with a script that will turn our gaze to a different reality and one where we are prepared to suspend our disbelief and enter the complex and mysterious space that is the human condition.

The language of symbols is pivotal in my work in that it seeks to present a deeper layer of meaning behind the narrative of literal appearances. I always imagine before I begin a work that the edges of the canvas or page are the proscenium arch of the stage in front of me and the unmarked surfaces are the curtain which I feel compelled to open. So, it continues, over fifty years on, the desire to raise the curtain and bring up the lights to reveal the stories that are part of my inner world, remains. I invite you, the audience, to suspend your disbelief and enter this theatre of the imagination.”

– Andrew Antoniou, 2024
