Glyphs and the Poet
- G.W. Bot

‘Over a number of decades and based on many thousands of sketches made while working in nature, I have devised a language of marks, derived from these sketches, that I have called Glyphs. As my work progressed, it became apparent that there are several Glyph languages that were given birth by different environments and ecosystems, including Grassland Glyphs, Water Glyphs, Ocean Glyphs and others. These find expression in different art mediums, such as relief prints on different papers and cloths, bronze and steel sculptures, engraved on stone, cast in glass or moulded in clay and then fired and glazed.

Also, over a number of decades, emerged a metaphor for the human presence that I have called The Poet. The Poet is both a witness and a participant who may comment on the nature of life, on birth and death, on the wind the blows through the grasslands, the currents that move in the deeps of the ocean, on the vastness of the cosmos and the way that all is interconnected, universal and sacred. The Poet carries a song about all of this and this song finds its expression in my art.

In this exhibition, The Poet can be you or me, a portrait of the sun or moon or a reflection of the land itself. The Poet is always present in the artwork, but sometimes you need to wait for The Poet to be revealed to you through a process of meditation.’
