‘Sculpture takes us in an unbroken line all the way back to our origins as humans. Unlike painting, where the trail of evidence is frequently broken by the fragility of the medium, sculpture lasts. It is one of the most ancient of all the living art forms and Ron Robertson Swann’s significant place in this tradition of representation – both abstract and figurative – is accepted throughout Australia and beyond.  

The works in this exhibition stand outside the barriers of locality, nationality and parochial culture. Robertson Swann’s traditions of practice take him through Caro and Moore (with whom he worked), Smith, Epstein, Brancusi and Maillol, all the way to the plastic explorers of Greek antiquity with their brightly coloured statuary and back still further. At eighty, and still in the prime of his creative life, Ron looks back through his work more than 25,000 years to the Venus of Willendorf.’ – excerpt from the catalogue essay by Dr John Vallance, 2021
