OPENING NIGHT Tuesday 6 May 6pm to 8pm
MEET THE ARTIST Saturday 10 May 2pm
‘Room to move’ is the title I have given to this exhibition of wood block prints and large abstract paintings. It speaks of an art-making process that moves from one idea to another, freely allowing each new idea to evolve from those already made. The woodblock prints are informing the paintings, the paintings are informing the prints. A kind of dance between the two.
The process involves a necessary immersive surrender to unexpected juxtapositions of shape and colour that meld to new and satisfying resolutions and in turn make further steps towards works yet to come. A process that leaves room for the viewer to complete the making, each in their own way, bringing their own influences and experiences to their evolving interpretation.
For me the art making process is also reminiscent of the space and flexibility of time that you experience as a child with endless afternoons of play as the next idea and then the next surfaces and then is discarded or incorporated in whatever exciting mystery emerges next.
The exhibition title is a recognition of this playful euphoria and the unexpected connections it can bring, of how good things can be revealed when we give ourselves (and each other) room to move.
