Recent Landscapes
- Sue Anderson

‘These artworks originate from recent observations of natural areas of bushland and coastlines in New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria. Travelling by boat, exploring small inlets and islands in Tasmania and Port Phillip Bay, walking through bushland and taking time to absorb the qualities of each environment.

In the resulting artworks, shells, flowers, trees and birds burst from their surrounds of land forms, skies, and seas as they have over time. Nature is all encompassing, humans and their necessities are diminished, scaled down, or completely erased. When immersed in these areas you can feel the resonance with the indigenous owners, their belonging and knowing of the land. This awareness combines with concern that these beautiful and astonishing pockets of wilderness are also vulnerable to destructive intrusions from the modern world.

Being amongst the ecosystems of oceans and forests, feeling its dynamic energy, seeing it continuing on, is a great privilege, gives joy and a sense of hope for the future.

The whole expanse of the landscape and intricate details are captured in these paintings expressing natures distinct character, its enchantment and wonder. Through the language of painting, we are reminded of the endless mystery and extreme preciousness of our environments and landscapes.’ – Sue Anderson, 2024
