Michael Le Grand

Michael Le Grand is one of Australia’s foremost contemporary sculptors, celebrated for his dynamic and masterfully realised works. Le Grand has been working with steel for almost four decades, consistently expanding and evolving his understanding of the medium, resulting in a prolific output of works in large and small scale.

His process begins with exploration, responding to the properties and dynamics of the material itself, before defining a concept and working it though to its resolve. While abstract in form, his works often address broad themes relating to philosophy and the human experience.

Le Grand’s work is characterized by the application of vibrant, high gloss auto paint to create brilliant surface textures. Bold colour is applied to unify the form, and enables the artist to create highlights and accents, and define the articulation of space.

In this exhibition, some works feature a frame as a passive element, with other parts of the sculpture transitioning through it. These compositions challenge the notions of frontal perspective and encourage the discovery of alternate viewpoints. Le Grand’s engaging sculptures invite active participation from the viewer, leading us to explore and engage with multiple perspectives.
