Marvellous Melbourne
- Nick Howson

Nick Howson uncovers visual poetry and rich beauty from his surroundings. Captivating patterns and vibrant colour harmonies emerge from the everyday scenes of modern life.

In his recent series of paintings Howson continues to explore his beloved hometown of Melbourne and its landmarks, through the unique lens of life during the pandemic. He spent a lot of time exploring the city during the recent lockdowns, describing it as “a surreal place of totally empty streets for as far as could see, huge buildings with no one in them, no cars; silence.”

Howson poignantly captures the mood of a city in waiting; empty streets and roads are viewed at a distance; familiar icons such as Flinders Street Station and the NGV stand majestic and alone. In many of these works, when people gather it is to buy groceries, to queue for vaccines, or to protest; yet also, comfortingly, they come together to go fishing or to watch a game of football.

These sensitively observed works in Howson’s characteristic allegorical style, sometimes sombre in tone, often uplifting and humorous, evoke a deep sense of warmth and compassion, offering the artist’s personal observations and insights into our shared human experience.
